Books on Wheels - the journey so far!

(Please scroll down for the latest news)

March 2015

Mrs Hewerdine, our Literacy Lead, had an idea! Let's have our school library in a Double Decker bus! She shared her idea with the school council, staff, governors and Friends of Fourfields and everyone supported the idea. Mrs Mulley approached Stagecoach who kindly and generously agreed to donate a double decker bus and invited Mrs Hewerdine to Lincoln to choose one!

April 2015

The project, Books on Wheels, was shared with the whole school community.

CREATE volunteered to draw up a feasibility study ahead of their architects plans.

Mrs Hewerdine, with Mr Wade as her advisor, travelled to Lincoln. There were three buses to choose from; this is the one which Mrs Hewerdine felt was destined for our school! It was taller than the other two and had a few more features we could keep to retain the 'bus' feel.

May 2015

The bus arrives! The bus is welcomed by the school and Stagecoach representatives thanked. Safety fencing is erected (thanks to help and generosity of Princebuild) and the bus itself locked.

June 2015

Mrs Hewerdine and Miss Davis take a group of lucky children to meet with the architects in London !! to discuss the design.

Then all the children are tasked with homework - to design the graphics and interior for the bus! These are some of the drawings which were chosen.

Friends of Fourfields hold a Summer Fayre, and raise funds for the bus. Other members of the Friends of Fourfields committee and teachers are sponsored to run to raise funds for the bus. Finally one brave parent jumped from a plane - for donations!

We also receive donations from other parents, other Friends of Fourfields events and from Amazon. And, of course, the first £10k is from the school office fund raising efforts (including many raffles) over the last school year! Thank you all!

September 2015

The architects drawings are finalised and planning permission is agreed for three years. The work begins to secure three quotes for this work and drafting up the specification for all the work.

July 2016

Following another successful Fayre, Friends of Fourfields announce that they have raised the requested £10k. The refurbishment can now commence. Meetings are arranged with Decker Buses, a local firm who have considerable experience in converting buses to alternative uses.

1st August 2016

Today the bus was collected by Decker Buses to enable the transformation to our library to begin.  There is much work to do but we hope to have a large chunk completed over the summer holidays.  The bus was reluctant to move - with the alternator jammed. However, Tony worked his magic and drove the bus off site leaving 4 marks in the playground tarmac where the wheels had stood for over a year!

1st September 2016

Refurbishment is a work in progress!

 November 2016

The foundations are dug out and replaced with hardcore and concrete and the cabling ducts laid for electricity and IT.

February 2017

The bus returns to our School in the half term holidays.

There are a few logistical tasks yet to be completed like a path to the bus and electricity and seating....but we are hopeful the books on wheels project will be 'open for business' very very soon!
